Portrait of Michiel de Ruyter
Sale
Ferdinand Bol (1667)
Michiel de Ruyter, Admiral at Sea, won gloriously against the English during the Four Days Battle in 1666. As a remembrance, he had his portrait painted by the Amsterdam portrait painter Bol. In the background you can see a seascape with De Ruyter's flagship. The portrait is still in its original, 17th-century frame. It is a gilded trophy list with a magnificent collection of weaponry: drums, banners, cannons and powder kegs. At the top centre is De Ruyter's coat of arms.
