Isaac and Rebekah, known as 'The Jewish Bride
Sale
Rembrandt van Rijn (1665 - 1669)
Two of his contemporaries had themselves depicted by Rembrandt as characters from the Bible in historical costumes. In this moving painting, Rembrandt focused on the couple's tender gestures: the loving touch that is reciprocated with a gentle caress. The figures and their postures correspond to the preliminary study (no. 67), only the peeping king Abimelech is missing. We, the spectators, take over his role as witnesses of their secret love.
