Among the nobles who rebelled against the authority of Philip II in the Netherlands, William of Orange (1533–1584) became the great leader of the revolt. He stood up for his own interests, strived for greater independence and advocated freedom of religion. In 1580, Philip II put a price on his head; Four years later, he was murdered.
