Still life with cheeses, almonds and pretzels Sale
Clara Peeters (1615)
In this still life, cheeses, pretzels and figs are displayed on the table, along with precious objects such as a gilded Venetian glass and a Chinese dish. The Antwerp painter Clara Peeters was one of the earliest food still life painters and had a great influence on the painters from the Northern Netherlands with her banquets. Peeters put her signature on the silver wedding knife, but she also painted herself. In the tin lid of the earthenware jug is the reflection of a woman's face with a white cap. That's Clara's self-portrait.
