Ships in the Roads II Sale

Willem de Velde de Jonge (1658)

Willem van de Velde II (the Younger) often painted seascapes with a low horizon, windless weather and large cumulus clouds that stand out against the blue sky. The slack sails provide an atmospheric play of light and shadow. In the centre is a richly decorated yacht with the Dutch flag. Cargo ships have anchored around it and a few rowing boats are sailing around, transporting people on board to and from the shore.
