Portrait of Maria van Strijp
Sale
Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck (1652)
Portrait of Maria van Strijp (1627-1707), wife of Eduard Wallis. Knee piece, sitting in a chair to the left, face turned towards the viewer. In the right hand a fan. Verspronck painted not only Maria van Strijp and her husband, but also her mother and her brother-in-law. He usually portrayed his patrons standing. In this case, however, Maria sits sideways on a chair with its back to the viewer. He borrowed this playful device from portraits by Johannes Cornelisz.
