The Hague painter De Gheyn was perhaps the first Dutch master to paint an independent flower still life shortly after 1600. He made this painting more than ten years later. It shows a rich bouquet with many different flowers.De Gheyn did not copy an existing bouquet; These flowers bloom at different times. He was interested in 'portraiting' the most beautiful flowers. That's why he placed them all clearly visible on the front of the bouquet.
