Double portrait of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) and Suzanna van Baerle (1599-1637)
Sale
Jacob van Campen (1635)
In the 17th century, it was customary for wedding portraits to consist of two separate paintings. This double portrait of Constantijn Huygens and Suzanna van Baerle is an exception to that rule. What is special is the way in which he can be seen in profile, while she leans forward slightly to look at us. The couple is holding a sheet of music, as a sign of harmony in their marriage. The portrait was painted by Van Campen, the architect of the Mauritshuis.
