Self-Portrait Rembrandt
Sale
Rembrant van Rijn (1669)
No 17th-century artist made as many self-portraits as Rembrandt. This self-portrait dates from 1669, the last year of Rembrandt's life. Perhaps this is his very last self-portrait. The expressive freedom in the execution shows that Rembrandt was certainly not exhausted at the end of his life. Remarkable, for example, is the way in which he painted the face with firm brushstrokes. With thick layers, almost sculpted paint, Rembrandt suggests a man of flesh and blood. This is a masterpiece.
