The Sea near Katwijk Sale

Jan Toorop (1887)

Toorop lived in Brussels in 1885 and became a member of the artists' group Les Vingt. There he became acquainted with the work of Gustave Courbet (elsewhere in this room), who often painted with the palette knife. Two years later, Toorop also painted part of this seascape with a knife. The effect is realistic, but if you look closer, you will see a fantastic mixture of colors.
