The Golden Bend in the Herengracht in Amsterdam from the west Sale

Gerrit Berckheyde (1672)

The cityscape did not develop as a genre until after 1650, with Berckheyde as one of the most important specialists. Here he captured the new building in the most expensive bend of the canal with mathematical precision. By omitting the young row of trees that actually stood on the quay, an extra artistic effect is created in addition to the topographical reliability.
